]]> Fri Sep 28 2007 The Dirty Water Club presents - The Sugars; The Penetrators; King Automatic http://the-dirty-water-club.photos.gb.com/c840341.html From the Dirty Water Club email... KING AUTOMATIC This incredible and amazing Frenchman is the ultimate one man band - the freshest trash blues explosion in ! His new album, Automatic Ray (Voodoo Rhythm) presents 11 tracks of instantly foot tapping blues punk (with some electro weirdness simmering somewhere between the cracks). The King plays kick and snare drum, guitar and farfisa organ. And sings. All at the same time! And leaves a smoking tambourine and the smell of melted roquefort in his wake. The reverb will have our interplanetary neighbours filing complains for the next two millennia. But it's worth it! THE PENETRATORS This is a group whose reputation precedes them! They play ultra good time garage hits - they wear matching outfits and give a full-on show, not just a performance. Expect lots of dancing and hollering. Watching the Penetrators has all the joyous carefree abandon of drinking cheap martini at a party and getting your hand up a girl's/boy's (delete as appropriate) jumper at the age of 15 (actually that sounds good to me now). They blaze through a set of cover versions of pre-1962 material, succeeding in making incredibly famous songs such as "Twist and Shout" all their own. Which is some feat! Their two-pronged attack on the front of the stage and the multi-layered harmonies gets the whole audience on their feet dancing. Brilliant! Now, after a long unplanned absence "due to deaths, rehab, testicular swelling, drunkenness medical trials, exorcism an' all", they're back (minus lady singer Paloma who has left to concentrate on the Eurovision Song Contest, so they say). The band say they are "...getting multiple fingers out and shall be with lashings and lashings of new material. And John bought a Volvo. and a very nice new guitar. as did Lightnin'. Jonas Jonas didn't buy nuthin' but stole lots of sh*t off the rest of us." THE SUGARS This love lorn three found each other humming Jackie Wilson and Sonics 45s down by the riverbank. If you imagine 50s street corner harmonies colliding head on with a tricked out hot-rod. All crashing cymbals with a clutch bag of distortion and high heels in tow you'd be heading in the right direction This knockout trio of fuzzed up, doo-wop sweethearts kick out bluesy duets of heartache and jealousy. Their sole male band member studies the vocal arts of Bobby Bland, their teenage siren takes drumming lessons from Detroit's finest while the magic number is made up by a sugary voice so sweet she'll rot your teeth. Live, they throb to an undercurrent of the siren's kick-drum while the other two light up the stage with their high voltage chemistry. Belt up and hang on tight.
